These dogs are also used as guide dogs for the blind as well as service dogs for the disabled. They are even tempered and their gentle nature makes them a favorite family dog. The appearance of the golden retriever is symmetrical, active, powerful and good level mover but not clumsy or long in the leg. He is sound and well put together with a kind expression. The average height for males is 23 inches and for females 21 inches. Males weight from 70-80 lbs while females weigh 60-70 lbs. The coat should be flat or wavy with good feathering and dense, water-resistant undercoat. Color can be any shade of gold or cream. The skull is broad and well set on a clean and muscular neck with a wide and powerful muzzle and a good stop. The ears are well proportioned and of moderate size. The eyes are dark and well set apart with a kindly expression. The body is well balanced, short coupled and deep through the heart. The ribs are deep and well sprung. The fore-legs are straight with good bone and the quarters are strong and muscular with good second thighs and well bent stifles. The tail should not be carried to gaily or curled at the tip. The gait is free and well coordinated.
